Heroes Made In Melbourne
For the first time, the UCI Track Cycling World Championships will be held
in Melbourne at the magnificent Vodafone Arena, May 26-30, 2004. See 200 of
the world's finest athletes as they battle for the honour of the coveted World
Champion's rainbow jersey, and a place in their country's 2004 Olympic team.
More than 40 nations will contest 15 events, six for women and nine for men,
in a dazzling display of speed, tactics and thrilling racing.
The steep-banked walls of the Vodafone Arena offer an excellent close-up view
of track cycling, one of the world's most exciting spectator sports.
New world record the highlight of day 2
May 27, 2004: A world record and a historic win highlighted the second day
of competition at the world track cycling championships at Melbourne's Vodafone
Arena.
New Zealander Sarah Ulmer has temporarily deposed Leontien Zijlaard - van Moorsel
as the queen of world pursuit racing after a blistering ride this morning. Ulmer
was pitted against Zijlaard - van Moorsel in the qualifying round ride off and
the New Zealander broke the Dutchwoman's world record for the 3000-metres set
at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

New world record set in women's 3km IP

May 27, 2004: In the final qualifying heat of the women's 3km individual pursuit,
New Zealand's Sara Ulmer has broken the world record with a time of 3.30.604,
two-tenths of a second inside the record that was set by Holland's Leontien
Zijlaard - Van Moorsel in a semi-final at the Sydney Olympics.
